Main purpose of the job:
To ensure that the embedded software developed by the Company`s wireless development team continues to meet the relevant requirements and high standards expected by their customers. In most cases this involves developing test plans and specifications, a test system and test scripts. It will typically involve working with software and hardware engineers as part of a multidisciplinary project team. The test role will cover all aspects of the test cycle from early definition phases through to field use.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group:
The Software Group within The Company`s Wireless Division develops software for a wide range of wireless applications. They have particular strengths in low power, low cost radio implementations, with application areas such as telecommunications, healthcare, industrial and consumer goods. They have a significant pre-developed IP library to reduce development time and risk, including mature and proven protocol stacks.
Recent examples of their work include the complete development of a wireless medical telemetry system for measurement of a patient`s vital sign information, and a family of complex satellite communication devices that enable mission-critical information to be exchanged in remote areas of the globe. As is typical with their developments, both of these examples involved development of complete hardware and software solutions. Further examples include ZigBee and Bluetooth developments and an Air Traffic Control radio system.
Specific responsibilities:
Test engineers work on projects in multidisciplinary teams, sometimes on more than one concurrently. High quality work is essential from every team member.
As a project team member you would be responsible for carrying out your specific project tasks within the timescales and budgets agreed with your project managers. As your experience develops, you might wish to take on further responsibilities.
Minimum requirements:
- Degree in a technical discipline (i.e. engineering / software / maths / physics)
- Experience of efficient and repeatable testing in an embedded software environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience of scripting in C, C++ and/or Python
- Experience of testing embedded communications software
- Ability to multitask
- Excellent attention to detail
- Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel / Word / Powerpoint etc)
Desirable:
- ISEB Fundamental / Intermediate certificate in Software testing
- Skills in automating testing to enable higher test coverage within a given time
- Experience of generating tests plans from requirement specifications or use cases
- Experience of SVN or other source control systems
- Experience of using a bug tracking database
- Familiarity with standard software compilers and toolchains (gcc / make etc)
- Familiarity with various platforms (Windows / Linux / Unix / Solaris)
